Larry and Leonore Zusman Jewish Community Hospice, one
of the few Jewish-specific hospices in the Midwest, offers
those with terminal prognoses a holistic program of palliative
and psychosocial support in a uniquely Jewish atmosphere.
Though open to all faiths, patients within Zusman Community Hospice can expect
the dignified treatment as determined by Halachah and the
compassion that is a benchmark of the Jewish community. Zusman Community Hospice offers the highest quality of hospice care in Columbus and central Ohio.
Hospice care in general can include pain management, emotional
support, spiritual counseling, errand services, companion
services, music therapy, massages and anything that can
be of comfort. According to the National Hospice and Palliative
Care Organization (NHPCO), 90 percent of hospice services
are given in the patients' homes, which
can include private houses, apartments or long-term care
facilities.
Hospice exists in the hope that through appropriate care,
patients and their families may be free to attain a degree
of mental and spiritual preparation for death. Volunteers
and home health aides give the family caregivers an extra
hand or respite. They also provide patients with companionship
and help with tasks of daily living and leisure activities.
Patients are given pain management that can include a
variety of prescriptions as well as other nontraditional
therapies including "healing touch",
music therapy and other innovations. The goal is for patients
to be more comfortable and cognizant, thus increasing their
quality of life while dealing with their illness.
In addition to their experience with traditional hospice
care, Zusman Community Hospice staff understands and is specially trained in
Jewish rituals, ethics and Halachah in regards to the end
of life and grief process.
Zusman Community Hospice has a unique bereavement program
that follows the 13 months of traditional Jewish mourning
milestones. Guided by the traditions of shiva, (the first
seven days), shloshim (the first month), holidays, the
tombstone unveiling and the first anniversary, ZCH staff
work to help families through the grieving process. They
also operate a Bereavement Support Group for anyone in
the community, which takes place second Wednesday of each
month 6:00 p.m. at Wexner Heritage House.
Zusman Community Hospice is Medicare-certified. Services
are typically completely covered by Medicare or private
insurances with the general requirement that one must be
terminally ill with the physician stating that there is
not a cure available for that individual and that the person's
life expectancy is probably less than six months. According
to NHPCO, virtually all aspects of hospice care, from emotional
counseling to home health aides, are covered with little,
if any, out-of-pocket expense to the family. Ongoing support
is given by Epstein Memorial Chapel and other private donations.
Volunteers are an integral part of Zusman Community Hospice.
They offer respite for caregivers and comfort for patients.
Volunteers can also work in administrative and marketing
areas. For more information on volunteering with Zusman

Zusman House
Larry and Leonore Zusman Jewish Community Hospice offers
an exciting addition to its traditional home-based hospice
care. Zusman House is an inpatient unit adjacent to Wexner
Heritage House that boasts five private bed rooms, a common living
area and kitchen, a meditation room and offices. Each patient
room has access to a beautifully landscaped patio. Inpatient
hospice care is helpful in a patient’s advanced
disease stages and as a respite from the challenges of
home care.
Zusman House was made possible through a generous gift
from Larry and Leonore Zusman, as well as community contributions.
The names of contributors are part of the very fabric of
Zusman House, etched into paver bricks on the patio and
gracing a stained glass art piece in the chapel.
