Established in 1987, the Shalom House, Inc. program moved under the WHV umbrella in 1990, thanks to a grassroots effort set forth by a group of concerned community members. With the collaboration of many individuals and organizations, the program was created to provide a home for adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities (MR/DD).
Today, VWSH is a vibrant home offering habilitation programming designed to allow its consumers to live as active members of our community. Self-esteem, socialization, work skills, money matters, cooking, health awareness, and other life skills are a part of the daily routine. Residents are also exposed to other life-enhancing activities, including spiritual worship services, voting activities, music therapy, and more.
The building runs much the same as its counterpart and it too offers habilitation programming designed to engage its consumers in the activities that encourage independence and self-sufficiency.
Both Medicaid-supported, the two group homes are designed to serve as a starting point from which MR/DD adults gain the skills and confidence needed to begin on a path toward the program's supported living program, which is another step toward living as independently as possible.
Located on Astor Avenue in Bexley, VSA is a HUD-subsidized building offering maximum independence when possible, and professional support when needed.
The supported living program sends habilitation specialists out to meet the needs of MR/DD adults living throughout the community, thus encouraging independence while also monitoring individual needs and making alternative care and housing recommendations as deemed appropriate.
