Zusman House Opens its Doors

Nov. 2, 2005

Zusman House officially opened its doors with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 27. Over 100 community members gathered to witness benefactors Larry and Leonore Zusman cut the ribbon and to tour the state-of-the-art home for inpatient care of terminally ill individuals within the Larry and Leonore Zusman Jewish Community Hospice program.

Zusman House, one of the few dedicated hospice facilities in central Ohio, consists of five patient bedrooms, a common living area and kitchen, a meditation room and offices. An outdoor patio is accessible from each patient bedroom. Ample room and amenities are available for family members to be with their loved ones.

With the new space, Larry and Leonore Zusman Jewish Community Hospice is expanding its traditional home-based hospice services. The project was made possible due to a generous naming gift by Larry and Leonore Zusman, which will be recognized at the dedication.

Speaking at the event, Richard Lamden, president/CEO of WHV, stated, “Tonight Wexner Heritage Village opens a new door to the community. The continuing success of our organization is largely based on the solid partnerships we maintain with top-notch individuals and organizations. That has never been more evident than with the success of our hospice program.”

Jewish Community Hospice provides a holistic approach to care for terminally ill individuals that includes pain and symptom management, spiritual and social support, and an array of home health and volunteer services as needed. The general goals are enhancing the quality of life of patients and their families, and keeping patients in their own homes. Inpatient hospice care is helpful in a patient’s advanced disease stages and as a respite from the challenges of home care.

“Zusman House is an exciting addition for the Bexley and Berwick areas that will offer comfort for individuals with advanced illnesses. It is state-of-the-art with a sense of home added through the gracious décor and amenities such as flat-panel televisions and comfortable furnishings,” stated Nisha Hammel, assistant vice president – community services.

The first hospice patients will be admitted to Zusman House beginning January 2006. Staff and volunteer offices have already relocated there, creating a centralized campus for Larry and Leonore Zusman Jewish Community Hospice.
