Wexner Heritage Village Associates Learn Advances in Dementia Care

June 27, 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Dr. Cameron Camp of the Myers Research Institute at Menorah Park in Cleveland recently presented a daylong seminar on methods of dementia and Alzheimer’s care to nearly sixty associates at Wexner Heritage Village. The seminar was sponsored by the Harry, Leah and Ida Cabakoff Lecture Series and lunch was provided by an anonymous friend of the organization.

Dr. Camp presented new philosophies of caring for those with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease based on the Montessori method of teaching, which involves utilizing an individual’s unique strengths and every day environment to achieve success. Associates learned several specific techniques to help residents better adapt to challenges of dementia and improve their activities of daily living.

“We are very fortunate for the opportunity for such high quality continuing education for our staff. Their commitment to learning and applying innovative techniques help put Wexner Heritage Village among the top long-term care facilities in the state,” said Prentice Lipsey, administrator.

Wexner Heritage House offers fifty private rooms in the Yassenoff Neighborhood that are dedicated to serving those with moderate Alzheimer’s/dementia. Often, residents in the additional three neighborhoods of the building also may experience some degree of dementia. To better serve such individuals, the organization underwent a concentrated culture change effort beginning in 1999 to reduce medical models of care and increase home-like environments, personalized care and individual choice.

“This recent seminar served to re-invigorate our efforts to offer the highest quality of care for residents with dementia,” said Lipsey.
